It’s been 334 days since Napo submitted its pay claim to probation leaders.
At the time of publishing, there has been no response.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Napo podcast, General Secretary Ian Lawrence and National Chair Ben Cockburn were clear about the mood among members: frustration, anger and deep disappointment, matched by growing disbelief at the employer’s inaction.
“There is no pay offer,” Ben said bluntly. “Despite all that time, despite the significant amount of work the union has been doing to apply pressure, there is still nothing we can put in front of members.”
Ian echoed that frustration, pointing out that ministers and central employee relations had promised an offer before Christmas. “We expect that promise to be kept,” he said. “The blame for this delay does not lie with the union.”

How on earth is this, whatever the outcome, going to affect what should be our next payrise in April 2026!? It seems entirely possible that if the offer isn’t deemed acceptable that we will be without 2 pay rises come the Spring
The Cabinet Minister Lord Timpson explained in his talk with all HMPPS Staff this week, that he truly believes in the work we do to rehabilitate offenders and adopted this approach and is the ethos in his own business – Timpson’s. He said he wanted to help ex-offenders and give them a new start. He commented on the lack of a pay deal, which was one of the topics raised in the Q&A session; so I think it should be paramount and top priority that he is brought to task on his promise and this issued is settled no later than 31st January 2026. Make him keep his promise!!
Meanwhile we got a £20 high five for all our hard work this year….
