Napo Magazine - The Trade Union, Professional Association and campaigning organisation for Probation and Family Court staff news.

Napo defends members on Sky News

Ian Lawrence appeared on Sky News to provide the union's insight into the HMIP report into the Damien Bendall Case.

Damien Bendall was on probation when he committed four horrific murders.

HMI Probation has recently published its inquiry into this case, which as expected was picked up by several news outlets including Sky News and National Official Tania Bassett appearing on Channel 5.

Napo GS Ian Lawrence, appeared on Sky News to provide the union’s insight into the Inspector’s conclusions and observations into what led to this heinous crime.

Napo are also in the process of preparing a response to a London Assembly Police and Crime Committee Report into probation services in London.

Another HMIP Serious Further Offence Report is expected to be released next week.

As can be seen from Ian’s interview above, Napo has expressed our appreciation of the grief and anger felt by the victim’s families.

We have also made it clear that Napo will continue to expose the unsustainable working conditions which our members are facing given this government’s failings to listen to the warnings we have been highlighting over many years.

  1. The SFO review makes repeated reference to the fact that information was missed (notably the police intelligence regarding his risk to children) but does not acknowledge how difficult it is to find information on NDelius, nor does it make any recommendations for improvement. To deliver an effective service we need effective systems; NDelius is ineffective and is a barrier to effective practice.

  2. Important argument made by Ian Lawrence. As a retired officer I am familiar with serious case reviews in the past but am just so conscious of the structural and systemic factors Ian refers to which Uber supports and resources officers today.
