Next Steps in Ending Violence Against Women and Girls

This year’s AGM professional session tackles one of the biggest issues of our time: ending Violence Against Women and Girls. With speakers from HMPPS, Cafcass, the TUC and academia, the panel will explore what’s next for probation, Cafcass, and wider society — and how we can play our part in driving change.

AGM is where we set the agenda for the year ahead, but it’s also a chance to dig into the issues that impact members at work.

This year’s professional session is one you won’t want to miss: “Next steps in ending Violence Against Women and Girls” on Friday 17 October, 11:30am – 1:00pm.

We’ve brought together a brilliant panel:

  • Kim Thornden-Edwards, Chief Probation Officer, HMPPS

  • Jacky Tiotto, Chief Executive, Cafcass

  • Professor Kieran McCartan, University of the West of England, Bristol

  • Nikki Pound, Women’s Policy Lead, TUC

The discussion will be chaired by our very own Carole Doherty, Napo National Vice-Chair, who’s been at the forefront of our work around domestic abuse and sexual offending.

Why we’re talking about this

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) isn’t an abstract issue. It’s something members face head-on every day. From supervising high-risk perpetrators to supporting survivors, you see the impact up close. But with specialist teams being cut back, services under pressure, and staff stretched thin, the question is: what happens next?

This session is about connecting the dots. We’ll look at:

  • The future of probation’s work with domestic abuse and sexual offending.

  • How harassment and inequality show up in workplaces.

  • The training, resources and partnerships we need to actually keep people safe.

  • Why survivor voices should shape everything we do.

Why you should be there

Ending violence against women and girls isn’t just a justice issue, it’s about the kind of society we want to build. This session will be a chance to hear from national leaders, challenge the status quo, and add your voice to the call for real change.
