Parliament ponders probation

Probation continues to be a hot topic in parliament with MPs discussing the resourcing and identity of the service during this week's justice questions

Probation continues to be a hot topic in parliament with MPs discussing the resourcing and identity of the service during this week’s justice questions.

Richard Burgon MP asked why plans for one HMPPS were still being pushed ahead even though it had triggered a formal dispute with the unions.

New Govt measures to reduce the prison population “will rely heavily on a functioning Probation Service” said Shadow Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood with Gareth Bacon MP claiming: “We have recently increased the budget for probation by £155m”

Calling the £155m budget boast “a 4-year-old announcement dressed up as something new” Shabana Mahmood insisted Government must ensure the sentencing Bill measures “will not come into effect until there is not one Probation Delivery Unit still rated as inadequate”

Cat Smith MP questioned whether Government will abolish privatisation-era Post Sentence Supervision, which “is seen as simply a waste of time by both #probation officers and their employer” Minister Argar pledged to “reflect carefully” on this proposal to free up staff time.
