Shape the debate at AGM

AGM isn’t just where we meet – it’s where we decide. The motions you vote on now will shape the union’s campaigns for the year ahead. From pay and workloads to probation’s future and tackling the far right, the issues are on the table – but it’s your ballot that sets the order. Vote by 1 October, then join us in Eastbourne or online to have your say.

It’s that time again! Every year at AGM, members set the direction of Napo’s work, but before we even step into Eastbourne (or log in online), you get to decide which motions take the floor first.

Voting on the order of motions is your chance to make sure the issues you care about most don’t end up at the back of the agenda.

From Resolutions to Real Change

AGM motions don’t sit in a drawer gathering dust. When members speak, Napo acts and last year’s motions have been shaping our fights ever since.

  • Workloads and wellbeing: You said enough with the gimmicks. No more “apps” or “virtual high-fives” we need real support. Since then, Napo has pushed hard for paid wellbeing days, clinical supervision and meaningful action from HMPPS.
  • Pay and retention: Members were crystal clear: low pay and staff walking out the door is a disaster for public safety. We’ve kept up the pressure on government and employers and even went to ballot when a decent pay deal was not on the table – because that’s what you asked.
  • Probation’s identity: You called out the farce of being swallowed up in HMPPS. We’ve carried that fight to Parliament and the new government because independence for probation is more than a dream, it’s a demand.
  • Anti-racism and equality: You backed action to confront racism and the far right. Since then, Napo has mobilised members at demonstrations, challenged institutional failings, and made it clear that equality is at the heart of everything we do.

That’s the power of AGM. Your motion becomes a campaign, and your campaign becomes union action.

This Year’s Big Debates

The 2025 motions are in and it’s your vote that decides what gets priority. Here’s a flavour of what’s on the table:

  • Accessibility: Members are done with inaccessible workplaces. A motion calls for every probation building to meet proper standards because access is a right, not a privilege.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Two competing visions. One warns of the risks of rolling out AI with no thought for probation’s reality, the other highlights how it could cut through endless admin and free us up for real client work. Big choices here.
  • Specialist practice: Calls for specialist officers to support colleagues handling complex cases like chemsex ensuring staff aren’t left isolated, and public safety comes first.
  • Your future: Motions demanding Labour finally deliver on its promise to review probation and Cafcass governance, alongside Napo Cymru’s push for locally-run services. This AGM could shape the service for years to come.
  • Standing up to the far right: With racism and division on the rise, a motion demands education programmes so staff are equipped to challenge hate and misinformation at work and in communities.

Why You Need to Vote

AGM is our chance to decide what matters, but it starts with you choosing the order of motions. If you don’t vote, someone else sets the priorities.

Read the motions and then vote by midday 1 October

Make sure you show up at AGM – online or in Eastbourne – to have your final say on the motion

This is your union. Your voice. Your agenda. Let’s shape the fight ahead together.
