Phil Copple, Director General of Operations at HMPPS, joins Napo’s professional session to talk about some of the work and initiatives being undertaken in prisons and probation to tackle racism. He makes it clear that it starts with the leadership and outlines the qualities those at the top must have to to drive an anti-racist agenda.

Finishing up his speech, he asserts that he is “not on the fence when it comes to racism”. Believing there is hope for those who are ignorant and need educating, he also stresses that “We must give no quarter for those whose behaviour crosses a line for us. They offend me, they offend our values and they have no place in our organisation.”
