WiN Takes Action by Tackling Key Issues for Women in Napo

Women in Napo (WiN) is driving change with campaigns tackling violence against women, workplace inequality, and menopause support. Join the movement and make a difference!

Women in Napo (WiN) is ramping up its efforts to tackle some of the most pressing issues affecting women in the workplace and beyond. At this week’s WiN meeting, members came together to plan the next steps in Napo’s ongoing campaigns, share ideas for upcoming events, and highlight challenges that need urgent attention.

Napo’s Push to End Violence Against Women and Girls

Carole Doherty, Napo’s National Link Officer for WiN, shared the union’s plans to build on its campaign to end violence against women and girls (VAWG). Following up on recent coverage in Napo Magazine, the focus is now on hosting seminars and inviting expert speakers throughout the year. These events will culminate in a major professional session at AGM in October.

WiN’s Link Official, Annoesjka Valent, explained the vision: “We want to bring together professionals, activists, and our members to spark real change.” While speakers are yet to be confirmed, there are exciting ideas on the table, including:

  • TUC: Addressing workplace sexual harassment
  • Nicole Renehan and David Gadd: Insights from the HMIP report
  • Talking Forward: A family court perspective on children’s experiences

At the AGM, potential guest speakers include Jess Phillips MP and experts on the Istanbul Convention, making this a must-attend event for anyone passionate about equality and safety.

New Campaigns and Fresh Ideas

The meeting wasn’t just about big plans — members also brainstormed new ways to make a difference on the ground:

  • Surveying members to uncover experiences of domestic abuse and sexual harassment.
  • Developing posters and leaflets for offices to raise awareness of key issues.
  • Partnering with initiatives like “Reclaim These Streets” or other local events taking place such as one in Kent in March (more details to follow).

The group also explored how to connect with other unions and organisations internationally to learn from their research and campaigns.

Spotlight on Menopause and Workplace Policies

Members didn’t shy away from addressing frustrations with employers over menopause and absence management procedures. Despite promises made at an HMPPS Women’s Conference in Birmingham a few years ago, many feel progress has been painfully slow.

The group also highlighted the potential for new campaigns, including a push for better maternity policies inspired by the National Education Union’s “Maternity Matters” initiative.

TUC Women’s Conference 2025

As the 2025 TUC Women’s Conference approaches, WiN is already gearing up to make its voice heard. Issues like menopause and period products are high on the agenda, and members will review motions for the conference at the January WiN meeting.
